Athena Singh Leads the 44th Kentucky Girls Junior Amateur After Day 1 at ULGC

SIMPSONVILLE, KY (July 10, 2023) – The first round of the Kentucky Girls Junior Amateur and 9-Hole Junior Amateur kicked off today at the University of Louisville Golf Club. There were strong performances across all divisions, with Athena Singh of Morehead taking the lead for the 16-18 division, firing a 69 (-3).

Teeing off on hole 10 at 9:30 this morning, Singh got off to a slow start with a bogey on both 12 and 13. However, she was able to quickly right the ship with birdies on 15 and 18 to make the turn to the front at even par. Adding four birdies (2, 5, 8 and 9) and just one bogey (7) to her round on the front nine led to her posting the low score of the day with a 69. Singh looks to win her second tournament of the 2023 season, her first being April's Eastern Kentucky Junior Championship. She begins her second round at 10:06 tomorrow morning.

Lexington's C.A. Carter sits just behind Singh after her first-round 70. Her matching scores of 35 on the front and back both featured two birdies and one bogey. She joins Singh in the 10:06 pairing.

The 13-15 age division also features a close leaderboard, with Allyson Kaelin of Louisville sitting in first with an 83, and Mollie Neeley of Richmond and Samantha Abell of Lebanon T-2 with 86s. Kaelin also looks to take home her second title of the season. The three tee off in the 8:09 pairing tomorrow morning.

The tournament continued to see low scores in the 9-hole competition. For the boys, Jamison Welch (36) leads the 8 & under division, with Elijah Erxleben (37) topping the 10 & unders and Eelan Bobrowski-Hall (34) sitting in first for the 11-12 group. Tee times begin at 8 in the morning for day two.

On the girls side, Piper Dunn holds a 3-shot lead after her score of 34 for the 10-12 division. Parker Haddix sits in second with a 1-over 37. For the 9 & under group, Madeline Sheretz sits atop the leaderboard with a 42 over Mia Simpkins. Tee times begin at 8:54.
